Build/Maintain a Safe Campfire Putting Your Campfire Out Completely

Build/Maintain a Safe Campfire
Check with local agencies for campfire restrictions in your area before you leave.

Dig a pit 4-6 inches deep on level ground away from any overhanging vegetation.

Clear the area within 5 feet of the pit of all vegetation and combustible material (clear down to the soil) to prevent the fire from creeping out.

Circle the pit with sizable rocks that will prevent embers and sparks from escaping the fire pit.

Store firewood upwind and at least 10 feet away from the pit.

Keep a shovel and a bucket of water near the fire pit.

Don't stack fuel too high in the fire pit. As the wood burns and shifting occurs, wood that is stacked too high may fall outside the fire pit.

Avoid disturbing the fire to prevent creation of sparks and floating embers. When adding wood to the fire, do it slowly and gently. Keep fire small and manageable.
