Fire Resistant Structural Ideas

There are some changes that can be made to the structure of your home that can help it become more fire-resistant.

The area of your home that is the most at risk to igniting due to flying embers is the roof. Wood shake shingle roofs are the most susceptible to igniting from embers. We suggest Class-A asphalt shingles, metal, cement, or concrete products. There are many styles and looks available so that the aesthetic aspect is retained.

You can also clear your roof and gutters of all leaves, needles and other debris, and remove overhanging branches.

Chimney outlets and stovepipes can be covered with nonflammable screens that contain openings of .5” or less.

Consider exterior siding that is composed of something other than wood shingles, is underlain with solid sheathing and is well maintained.

Window shutters and dual-pane windows can be installed to reduce the amount of radiant heat that enters the home and may prevent the interior from igniting. If cost is a factor, these suggestions can be implemented on the side of the house that has the greatest risk of fire approaching due to nearby vegetation or slope.

Non-flammable screens can be installed around the base of decks to prevent debris from collecting. The area under decks should be kept completely free of vegetation, especially dead vegetation.
