If Wildfire Becomes an Immediate Threat

The following is a checklist of steps that you can take if a wildfire is threatening your home.

Personal Care
Wear protective clothing that consists of pants and long-sleeved shirts of cotton or natural fiber construction, sturdy shoes or boots, gloves, and a handkerchief or cloth to cover your face.
Contact someone and inform them that you are evacuating and where you are going.
Pack a disaster supply kit before wildfire season begins.

Home Care (Inside)
  • Close all windows and doors.
  • Close blinds and heavy curtains.
  • Remove curtains constructed of light material.
  • Open fireplace damper and close fireplace screen.
  • Move flammable furniture to the center of the room and away from windows.
  • Turn on lights to increase visibility in heavy smoke for firefighters.
  • Extinguish pilot lights.
  • Lock doors.


Home Care (Outside)
  • Seal attic and ground vents with pre-cut plywood or commercial sales.
  • Turn off gas and/or propane at meter.
  • Connect garden hoses to outside water sources.
  • Set up portable, gas-powered pumps for water.
  • Place lawn sprinklers on roof, but don’t turn on until house is in immediate danger.
  • Leave ladders outside for firefighters to use.
  • Wet down vegetation that is within 15 feet of the home.
  • Gather up firefighter tools such as shovels, rakes, etc., and place them in an easily accessible area.
